Recent “Live at Sint-Elisabethkerk” review in the print edition of The Big Takeover:
This 2010 Belgian concert recording was originally sold only on tour, but was too good not to get an official full-distribution release. The richly resonant acoustics of a church accentuate the lushness of Balmorhea’s epic, largely instrumental (vocals are wordless) post-rock featuring songful violin and cello and swelling dynamics; when the bass (a real stand-up bass, not bass guitar) and the cello and violin intertwine lines or project fat chords, it couldn’t be any other group. Six compositions come from Constellations, four from All Is Wild, All Is Silent; the surprises are “Clamor,” previously only on a 7”, the lively “Untitled” (new?), and a solo piano encore of “Constellations.” Absolutely beautiful.
